If you’re expecting a baby, first… congratulations! Lots of new parents would love to have photos of their new little addition but are not sure when or how to reach out to schedule a session. Here are answers to the top 4 questions expecting moms ask me about booking newborn photos.
When to Book Your Newborn Session with Alexandria Photographer Sarah Drewry
Most parents contact me around their 2nd trimester. It’s one more thing you can cross off your to-do list and gives you plenty of time to decide where you would like the photos, what you will wear, etc. I’ll mark the due date on my calendar, but we won’t schedule the actual session until baby arrives. I only take a certain number of newborn sessions a month so it’s best to schedule early. I can sometimes fit in last minute requests but it is not always possible.
How Old Should My Baby be for Newborn Photos?
Generally I prefer to photograph newborns when baby is around 7-14 days old. Young babies usually sleep a lot and enjoy being swaddled in the curly position that they were in the womb. Older babies are more sensitive to touch and wake up easier, however we can absolutely work with your timeline and when you would like to schedule!
Where Does the Session Take Place?
Your newborn photography session can take place in my studio in Old Town Alexandria at 113 S. Saint Asaph Street, or in your home in Northern Virginia or D.C. Here are some things to consider for either locations:
In my studio: Bright, neutral background + 2 huge windows with natural light. No cleaning or prep on your part, just show up and everything is ready for you! I do not use props or costumes. My main focus is on the connection between you, your family and your new baby. I do have some neutral-color swaddles and blankets, and a Moses basket for individual photos of baby. In the studio or at home, we will create a cozy, loving atmosphere so we can get plenty of photos of everyone cuddling and loving your new bundle of joy. In your home: I come to you so you don’t need to travel and you can get ready in the comfort of your own home. There’s also something intimate and personal about an in-home session. All you need to do to prepare is choose a room with at least one window that gets a good amount of natural light. In-home photos look best when everything is removed from surfaces so there are no distractions.
What Should We Wear?
I suggest neutral colors because they are classic and don’t “age” or go out of style. Small pops of color will work, but you always want to stick to muted tones, versus saturated/vibrant colors. There are several dresses available for mom in my studio wardrobe that you are welcome to wear, as well as wraps for baby. I am also happy to help you plan your outfits!
